Sustainable Agriculture and Adaptation of Agriculture to Climate Change

Overview

Adaptation of agriculture to climate change is an urgent regional priority under ECOWAP.

Although ECOWAS contributes a small share of global greenhouse gas emissions, West Africa faces severe climate impacts, including rising temperatures, extreme weather events, rainfall variability, floods, droughts, and land degradation.

These conditions are already creating serious human and economic consequences, especially for vulnerable groups such as women, youth, and older populations.

Key regional priorities
  • Climate change is intensifying food insecurity through droughts, environmental degradation, conflict pressures, and economic shocks.
  • Many countries still have limited resilience capacity to absorb and recover from climate-related disruptions.
  • Agricultural productivity and food systems remain highly exposed to climate volatility without stronger adaptation systems.
